In this section, we introduce a colleague each month from the Employment, Co-Determination & Mediation team. This month, it is Ymke Stam’s turn, Legal Officer within the Employment & Co-Determination team. Curious about her story and what drives her? Read on!
Could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us something about your career as an attorney?
My name is Ymke Stam, and I joined De Clercq Lawyers in June 2025 as a Legal Officer in Employment Law and Co-Determination. In March 2026, I will begin the professional training programme to become an attorney.
I completed both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Employment Law at Leiden University. I also obtained a master’s degree in Health Law at the University of Amsterdam, which formed a valuable addition to my Employment Law studies.
After graduating in March 2025, I worked for a year at a young boutique employment law firm in Haarlem. I then happily made the switch to De Clercq.
What are your areas of specialisation? Why should clients turn to you for legal assistance?
I specialise in employment law and co-determination, advising and representing private individuals, employers, and works councils. I have a particular affinity with the healthcare sector due to my master’s in Health Law and because several people in my social circle work in healthcare.
What sets De Clercq Attorneys & Notary apart from other law firms?
De Clercq has a wealth of knowledge, and quality is always the top priority. But that is not all: the firm is highly committed to sustainability and a healthy work-life balance, which makes it an inspiring and enjoyable place to work.
Can you share a challenging or interesting case that you successfully handled or will always remember?
During my time at the firm, I have already been able to support my colleagues in many interesting matters, including co-determination proceedings and dismissal cases. I am particularly drawn to matters involving the healthcare sector.
What is the most important advice you would give clients seeking legal assistance?
It is wise to seek legal advice early and to communicate openly about the situation. The better we understand the circumstances, the more effective our advice can be and the faster we can work toward a solution.
Are there current trends or developments in your field that clients should be aware of?
In my field, the emphasis is increasingly on prevention: many issues can be avoided through clear agreements and proper documentation. In addition, finding solutions outside of court—such as through mediation or negotiations—is becoming more important, as it is often quicker, more efficient, and less burdensome for clients.
How do you see the future of the legal sector, particularly in your area of specialisation?
In my area, the focus will increasingly be on preventing problems and offering practical solutions. Digitalisation and technology are making processes faster and more efficient, but the human element in employment law remains crucial. Personal guidance and tailored advice will therefore continue to be essential. Clients are also increasingly seeking out-of-court solutions, such as mediation or negotiation, because these approaches are quicker and less stressful.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work to relax? Any books, podcasts, or other resources you would recommend?
In my free time, I enjoy travelling, experimenting in the kitchen, discovering new restaurants, and losing myself in a good book.
What do you enjoy most about your work as an attorney at De Clercq Lawyers & Civil-Law Notaries?
The combination of a motivating working environment in which I am encouraged to develop further, assisting a wide range of clients with engaging legal questions, and the pleasant atmosphere at the firm makes working here a real pleasure.
