This month, it’s Renée Huijsmans-Zwijnenburg’s turn, Partner and Lawyer within the Employment, Employee Participation & Mediation team. Curious about her story and what drives her? Then keep reading!

Introduction

Could you briefly introduce yourself and tell us something about your career as a lawyer?

My name is Renée Huijsmans-Zwijnenburg, an employment law attorney with a strong passion for workplace safety and integrity. For many years, I have supported entrepreneurs and HR professionals with legal advice and solutions. I find it important not only to offer counsel, but also to think along about practical and future-focused decisions. In addition, I regularly provide training sessions and knowledge workshops, as I strongly believe in the power of prevention. My focus lies in supporting MKB+ companies and helping to create a work environment in which everyone feels safe and valued.

My career began with the ambition to make a meaningful impact in employment law. I am now proud to have joined this partnership—a milestone I hold in high regard!

Background and Expertise

What are your areas of specialization? Why should clients turn to you as their lawyer?

I specialize in employment law in the broadest sense of the word. This includes matters such as individual and collective dismissal, reorganizations, employment conditions, and incapacity for work. In addition, I have developed expertise in integrity issues, workplace safety, and undesirable conduct in professional environments. These are topics that I care deeply about and approach not only from a legal perspective, but also in a practical and strategic manner.

Why do clients choose to work with me?

Clients appreciate my dedicated and personal approach. I combine in-depth legal knowledge with a no-nonsense attitude: clear, practical, and to the point. My strength lies in translating complex legal issues into workable solutions that can be applied immediately. I also think ahead—my goal is not only to resolve issues, but to help organizations become more resilient for the future.

In short, I am not just there to answer a legal question; I work together with my clients to build sustainable solutions and a strong workplace culture.

De Clercq Advocaten Notariaat

What sets De Clercq Advocaten Notariaat apart from other law firms?

At De Clercq, personal attention, innovation, and collaboration are at the core of everything we do. We are not just legal professionals — we are true partners to our clients. We understand that every organization is unique, which is why we think along from both a strategic and practical perspective. This means we deliver tailor-made solutions and always look for approaches that genuinely work for our clients' specific situations.

We are also forward-thinking. We closely monitor new developments, such as the impact of AI on the labor market, and we help organizations prepare for what’s ahead. Our focus is not only on resolving legal issues, but also on strengthening organizations — for example, by prioritizing topics such as workplace safety and sustainable collaboration.

In short, at De Clercq we combine legal expertise with a human and innovative approach. That is what truly sets us apart.

Challenges and Successes

Can you share a challenging or interesting case that you successfully brought to a conclusion or that has stayed with you?

One case that has always stayed with me involved a complex matter concerning workplace safety within a healthcare institution. An employee reported sick after experiencing inappropriate behaviour at work, and it soon became clear that this was part of a deeper, structural issue within the department. Much was at stake for the organisation: not only workplace relationships, but also its reputation and the engagement of the wider staff.

In situations like this, my role is not only to look at the legal aspects, but also at the human and strategic dimensions. Together with the employer, we set up a process in which the complaints were taken seriously, an independent investigation was conducted, and targeted efforts were made to rebuild trust. At the same time, we ensured the organisation remained legally well-positioned through clear communication and strict compliance with laws and regulations.

What made this case particularly meaningful to me was that it wasn’t just about resolving an issue — it was about helping to build a safer workplace culture. After an intensive process, we were able to bring the specific matter to a solid conclusion and also provide recommendations for long-term improvements.

The greatest compliment came when the director said: “You didn’t just help us resolve the conflict — you helped make our organisation safer and better.” Those are the moments when you truly feel you’re making an impact — for the organisation and the people working within it.

Employment law affects people not only in their work, but often in their sense of identity. It is deeply rewarding to guide others through such a vulnerable and defining process.

Advice for Clients

What is the most important advice you would give to clients seeking legal assistance?

Don’t wait until a problem escalates — seek help in time. Many legal issues can be prevented or mitigated by obtaining early advice. Especially in employment matters such as dismissal, reorganizations, or integrity issues, it is crucial to take the right steps from the start.

In addition, be open and transparent about your situation and objectives. The more insight I have into your organisation and the issue at hand, the better I can help you find a solution that is not only legally sound but also aligned with your practical reality.

Finally, view legal assistance not only as a way to solve problems, but also as an opportunity to strengthen your organisation. Together, we can build a future-proof and safe workplace culture.

Are there specific trends or developments within your area of expertise that clients should be aware of right now?

Workplace Safety

Workplace safety is increasingly becoming a priority, both socially and legally. New legislation and stricter requirements regarding undesirable behaviour demand a proactive approach from organisations. Establishing clear policies, appointing a confidential advisor, and fostering a safe reporting culture are essential.

The Impact of AI on the Labour Market

Artificial intelligence is transforming the way we work. This raises legal questions related to privacy, algorithmic discrimination, and the effects of automation on employment conditions and reorganizations. It is important for organisations to be prepared for these developments and to have a clear understanding of the legal framework.

Sustainable Employability

With an ageing workforce and significant labour shortages, sustainable employability is gaining increasing importance. How do you ensure that employees remain healthy and productive, and what obligations do you have as an employer?

Future Vision

How do you see the future of the legal sector, particularly within your area of expertise?

The future of the legal sector — and employment law in particular — offers many opportunities as well as challenges. Here are some key trends I foresee:

Flexibilisation of the Labour Market
The rise of platform work, self-employed contractors, and hybrid employment models requires adjustments in legislation and regulations. Employers will increasingly need legal advice to remain compliant, especially as the balance between flexibility and security becomes more important.

Focus on Workplace Safety
Workplace safety will continue to be a major priority. Employees are entitled to a safe and inclusive work environment, and employers must actively respond to this. This means a growing need for policy advice, guidance in handling complaints, and support in preventing escalation.

Digitalisation and Automation
Technology is also transforming our profession. Think of legal tools that generate standard contracts, AI systems that analyse complex legal files, and the digitalisation of procedures. Nevertheless, the human factor remains essential when it comes to strategic advice and customised solutions.

A More Proactive Role for Lawyers
The role of the lawyer is shifting from problem-solver to strategic partner. Entrepreneurs and HR professionals increasingly expect us to think ahead, warn them about risks, and help prevent conflicts rather than simply resolve them.

Focus on Sustainability and ESG
Sustainability also plays an important role in employment law. Employers must ensure the sustainable employability of their workforce and comply with legislation relating to diversity and inclusion. ESG criteria (environmental, social, governance) are becoming increasingly relevant in HR policies and employment conditions.

In my view, the strength of the employment lawyer of the future lies in a combination of legal expertise, strategic insight, and a human-centred approach.

Personal Interests

What do you enjoy doing outside of work to relax? Are there any books, podcasts, or other resources you’ve recently read or listened to that you would recommend?

I enjoy reading, running, and attending festivals.

Books that have stayed with me — and that I highly recommend — are ’t Hooge Nest by Roxane van Iperen and Nirwana by Tommy Wieringa.

My favourite podcast is Achter het Vermogen. It focuses on entrepreneurs, their motivations, turning points in their lives, and the experiences that shaped who they are today. Truly inspiring!

Do you have any final words or advice for our clients or the readers of this newsletter?

Absolutely! To conclude, I would say:

Stay ahead of the curve. Legislation and regulations change quickly, and employers who proactively respond to trends such as workplace safety, sustainability, and labour market flexibilisation are always one step ahead.

Invest in a strong foundation. Clear policies, well-structured contracts, and a thoughtful approach to conflicts save time and money in the long run.

Seek advice early. Many issues can be prevented by involving legal expertise early in the process. A quick check beforehand can avoid a lot of trouble later.

Make workplace safety a priority. Employees are more engaged and perform better in a safe, inclusive environment. This is not only a legal requirement — it’s also a smart investment in the future of your organisation.

Finally: don’t hesitate to ask questions, keep learning, and feel free to seek advice. Together, we can help create workplaces that are stronger, safer, and future-ready!
