In this section, we introduce a colleague from the Employment, Employee Participation & Mediation team each month. This month, it's Laura Gringhuis' turn, a lawyer within the Employment & Employee Participation team. Curious about her story and what drives her? Read on to find out more!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and tell us about your career as an attorney at law?
Hi! I'm Laura Gringhuis, an employment law attorney at law at De Clercq Advocaten Notariaat. During my studies, I quickly discovered my passion for the intersection of people and law. After completing my Master's degrees in employment law, corporate law, and criminal law at the University of Groningen, I started at a firm in Utrecht. It was there that I truly fell in love with employment law. In 2022, I made the switch to De Clercq – and it turned out to be a perfect fit!
What are your areas of specialization? Why should clients choose you as their attorney at law?
My focus is on employment law in its broadest sense, with an emphasis on HR advice, such as underperformance, dismissal procedures, and illness & reintegration. I am also active within the Works Council team (for employee participation processes). Why should clients choose me as their attorney at law? I am involved, approachable, and always think beyond the purely legal framework. Sometimes a practical approach is more effective than a legal discussion. I am happy to guide clients through this.
What sets De Clercq Advocaten Notariaat apart from other law firms?
De Clercq Advocaten is not a dusty, hierarchical firm. What sets De Clercq apart is the informal atmosphere, genuine involvement, and mutual equality. Everyone can be themselves here, which brings out the best in each other. This open culture fits me perfectly!
Can you share a challenging or interesting case that you successfully completed or always remember?
One case that has always stayed with me involved a complex reintegration issue where the employer and employee were at odds. By listening carefully, working strategically, and considering all interests (including emotional and practical ones), we reached a solution that both parties could agree on. This ultimately led to a successful reintegration. These kinds of cases make my work both challenging and valuable.
What is the most important advice you would give to clients seeking legal assistance?
Don't wait too long! Early advice often prevents bigger problems and costs. And make sure to choose an attorney at law who matches your style and approach; it's a collaboration.
Are there any specific trends or developments in your area of specialization that clients should be aware of?
Disability remains an important theme, and there have been many developments in this area recently. Employers often struggle with absenteeism cases. Investing in good reintegration guidance pays off significantly. Make sure to get good advice on this: it prevents long and costly processes.
How do you see the future of the legal sector, particularly in your area of specialization?
The role of an attorney at law is changing. We are increasingly becoming sparring partners and strategic advisors, especially in employment law. This is also due to developments in AI. Despite these developments, I am convinced that the involvement of an attorney at law will continue to add value.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work to relax? Are there any books, podcasts, or other resources you have recently read or listened to that you would recommend?
In my free time, I enjoy being active. A walk or a visit to the gym really helps me relax. I also love detective stories, both in books and on Netflix. Additionally, you can wake me up for good food, such as a charcuterie board and a plate of pasta!
What do you enjoy most about your work as an attorney at law at De Clercq Advocaten?
No day is the same – and I love that! Combining legal work with strategic and practical thinking makes the job varied and dynamic. But the best part about De Clercq is the atmosphere. Great colleagues, flexibility, interesting cases, and a well-catered lunch make me look forward to going to the office every day.
